Waste & Recycling Projects & Programs

Brownfields Home Page - encourages economic development and cooperation to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields.

Capacity Assurance - working to assure that adequate capacity exists to manage hazardous wastes generated in each state.

Cleaning Up Our Land, Water and Air - EPA conducts and supervises investigation and cleanup actions at a variety of sites. Cleanups may be done by EPA, other federal agencies, states or municipalities, or the company or party responsible for the contamination. Cleanup may also refer to the reuse and redevelopment of sites, such as under the Brownfields initiative whereby abandoned or under-used commercial and industrial sites are cleaned of environmental contamination and reclaimed for productive use.

Combustion - ensures the safety and reliability of hazardous waste combustion in incinerators and boilers and industrial furnaces.

Corrective Action Program for Hazardous Waste Professionals - allows RCRA facilities themselves to address the investigation and cleanup of accidents or other activities that have released hazardous waste pollutants into soil, ground water, surface water, and air. There are approximately 3700 facilities that are in the corrective action workload.

Enviro$en$e - this site provides a single repository for pollution prevention, compliance assurance, and enforcement information and data bases.

Hazardous Waste Programs - alphabetical list of the Office of Solid Waste's hazardous waste programs and topics.

Land Disposal Restrictions Program - ensures that land disposed hazardous wastes do not pose a threat to human health or the environment.

Mixed Waste Homepage - a program to coordinate management of mixed waste containing radioactive and hazardous waste.

Mobile Sources - carries out a broad range of activities to reduce pollutants emitted from motor vehicles, off-road equipment (e.g., lawnmowers, boats, locomotives, etc.), and their fuels.

Oil Spill Program - information about the U.S. EPA's program for preventing, preparing for, and responding to oil spills that occur in and around inland waters of the United States.

Pay-As-You-Throw Programs - provides information about paying for solid waste disposal directly based on the amount of waste generated.

Pollution Prevention - source reduction of waste, and other practices that reduce or eliminate the creation of pollutants.

Product Stewardship - calls on those in the product life cycle--manufacturers, retailers, users, and disposers--to share responsibility for reducing the environmental impacts of products.

Recycling Non-Hazardous Waste - information and publications about recycling.

Superfund Information - locates, investigates and cleans up the worst hazardous waste sites throughout the United States.

Toxic Release Inventory - the source of information about toxic chemicals that are being used, manufactured, transported, or released into the environment.

Underground Storage Tanks (UST) - provides current information relevant to the Federal underground storage tank (UST) program.

Waste Minimization - focuses on reducing the generation and subsequent release to the environment of the most persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic chemicals in hazardous wastes.

Waste Prevention - offers information about efforts to reduce municipal solid waste and examples of how source reduction efforts benefit business and industry, governments, and consumers.

Wastewater Management - access a range of programs contributing to the well-being of our nation's waters and watersheds.

WasteWi$e Program - a voluntary program that targets the reduction of municipal solid waste; waste that would otherwise end up in a trash dumpster.
